Isaiah - 740 BC To say Jesus is in some sense God is of course to make a startling statement about Jesus. It is also to make a stupendous claim about God. The true God is not the god of philosophy or religion. We must not assume what God is like and then ask whether Jesus fits the description. We must allow Jesus and his cross to redefine our notions of God. God is not some impersonal, ultimate Absolute. He is not a deistic god who looks on the world he has made with indifference. He is not a God who must be placated through religious duties. Nor is he a lenient God who indulgently overlooks our rebellion and he suffering it causes. He is the God of the cross. Surfing trip
For the attention of those who want to surf this weekend and keep asking me questions *melina* My awesome surfing friend (Brad) from lufbra is doing a little surfing trip this weekend with some of his friends from home, although latest news from Jiggles is that his friends are lazy and he's having trouble getting them to go. It's somewhere - Brad knows The plan is to get there on friday evening and then just rent some board(s)and surf, staying at a campsite or sleeping in a car. As cars go Brad might be able to give a lift if his bunch is small enough, Tom Cardrick and Kyle King are probably up for it and have cars, pointless road trips is thier thing, Dave Barry? Gordo? I have no idea who wants to go. It should be cheap woo! Bring any skateboards you have too, there will be some of that too. Anyone who wants to come, tell me and we'll have a blast. Freefest!
Man Freefest, how awesome! Crazy music festival outside Rigrutt fountain on campus, man it was splaz! The church there giving free tea and coffee and biscuits, had some awesome fun there, plus the crazy black guy doing blues on his acoustic, had a massive dance in the middle of the crowd, dance off with Brad! Magic flying aero-ball, american football with wings flying everywhere, bundles most of the time. Take a break to study Jonah and then Dual Decay at 10, awesome! moshing hard to heavy heavy metal, was mad, made a new crazy friend. I mean cmon, toxicity by System, how hardcore for a mosh! no fractures, so its all good, even got a fart in there. Strobe lights + bezerk metal fans = pain. Met one of my lecturers while out street preaching on saturday too, he's gonna lend me a dvd tommorow! crazy! turns out he's awesome. Many a lecture to go, but not another 25+ hour week like last week *gasp*. Well I'm gonna briefly mention some of my dealings with human kind, it was pointed out I havn't updated in 7 weeks... Finally we're actually doing things with our holiday now, been night riding in teh Look out with Godo, and despite fear of a) cycling into a corpse and b) being eaten by bears drawn to the smell of meat crumbs, we survived our plunge into the deep forest, even found two other night riders, although it's always scary to spot anything that moves at night. Today be a work day pfffft, seeing as it all gets going when I get back, and perhaps another visit to pizza hut..... Everyone should come to lufbra seriously it rules. Tommorow = cycling to windsor (possibly topless) meeting Melina face (coz she rules) and having a bbq in the woods (to get food poisning) Cats are evil, especially when they work in pairs to ambush my dog and scratch his face off. Watched a film called saved! last night, a crafty swipe at religion where all the characters got worse and worse, and they magically got all better when they stopped focusing on religion and looked at life instead (with the birth of a new baby) message being, "it doesn't matter what religion you choose as long as you're happy and don't upset anyone" relativist, pluralist rubbish. I have to say most of the girls would have got a slap from me for getting christianity so wrong and turning it into a competition. weirdos Got fudge from Windsor, tis good. Tom might drive us to Cardiff to see mr Lloyd. We're gonna walk to Thorpe Park again this summer, anyone interested, only takes about 5 hours, plus we get to camp out and rely on the awesome power of male sense of direction (well we did take 2 hours to get to bagshot due to impenetrable wall of bushes, everywhere) plus more night riding, sign up now!! I'v been sooo busy, I have loads if work to do, but I havn't done an update in ages. Iv been at a UCCF (thechristianunions) training weekend just now. There where some powerful, powerful things brought up. Since I can't be bothered to do most of them I'll pick one. In this part of the world we expect life to be good. Just think about it, don't we just expect that, and when we suffer we consider it an unjustice! How screwed up our thinking is. We should be thankful, for if God treated us as we deserve, we would all by wiped out. We live in a fallen world, and how we forget that living here. The fact is that we live in the 10% of the world that is 'good'. In africa christians are openly persecuted. They are routinely tortured, involving pulling out of finger nails and beating with cattle prods, along with missionairies sent there, which often leads to martydom. Some who survived will never again be whole people this side of heaven. When asked, an african christian will reply "Why would you expect it to be any different?". Just think about it. Give thanks to God for the freedom we have! this does not just apply to christians. I asked whats wrong with the world, and 'whats right with it?' came back. What is right with the world - the world has fallen, yet so many put thier trust in things of this world. Christ alone is worthy of our trust. Jesus died on a cross 2000 years ago, there is no denying that, and he rose from the dead, there is more evidence for that then that Caeser exsisted! Why did he die? New Year was absolutely awesome!!!!!! (My interent broke, hence the late update + laziness) I went to the Surrey's for an amazing party with peoples from the church and teens plus. Fun was had by all in the extreme. We played the kinda games that really are so much fun, but are often spoiled by playing with the family at christmas... Pictionary and all the crazy question games, and balance on the exercise ball, which resulted in: - A viscous two footed lunge at Beccy - Bebe causing Ian's life to flash before his eyes - Dan making a fool of himself with his lack of balance - Tim and the Moore's whooping everyone - Me being very falling off like There was also twister on two mats, which made for craziness cubed. I won one game, and almost had my leg broken in another. Fireworks!!! You gotta love the skyflowers. Nathan almost lost his face. Our firewors were dwarfed by others. Flaming fury rained down on the cars in the street and us. Then wink murder!!! How can you get any better? How about mafia! The crazy game that took til 2. Ian betrayed me. Claire had a devious scheme to be the only Surrey left. Dan was smart and knew what was going on, so we immediatly hung him on suspicion of being too clever for his own good, and therefore part of the mafia. I accused anyone who said anything. In the end they suspected and hanged me, even though I did an innocence dance and insisted on being an idiot. They thought I was bluffing. I stayed for a while and hung out with Tim, Nathan, Bebe, Chramaine, Ian and Stuart for talking, or in my case mostly after eight eatage. Then we all went home at 4 and went to church next morning. I asked not to recieve any presents from my family this year, and for the most part it worked. My mum bought me a new mobly phone handset, but I love my broken but working phone! So I didn't get away with nothing like I hoped. I did get the only thing I wanted when I was fored to make a list which was a book by a very smart lawer guy who set out to disprove christianity as he was atheist and after 2 years of reserach became a church leader.... I am very happy indeed, my family listened to me and didn't get me much at all! wicked cool! A book, a phone, a goat (for an african family) and an Iron maiden hoodie, which I happen to have already, but it's old and worn. hehehe. The part of the day I was most looking forward to, and was too excited to sleep because of was going to church in the morning. I had so much fun, I get to hang out with the Surreys and the Moores, so it just plain rules. I guess I'm probably the only one who was lying in bed last night barely able to contain myself because I was thinking of Jesus, and just wanted to run around and sing praise to him. I was just completly overflowing with happines and thankfullness, even more than usual tee hee hee. I got a hat in the shape of a strawberry in my stocking, i'm not allowed to break the tradition and not have a stocking. Long night ahead...
Just a general what im up to now kinda thing: I had 3 lectures, the went as lectures go, I have work to do but o well, there are more important things in life. Judo for the first time in a while, due to slight finger breakage, but it was awesome to be back. It was a technique and fitness session, so no randoori.grrrr. We warm up to "sexy wrestling" now. I think our clu T shirts are gonna be pink, with sexy wrestler on the back. As was pointed out there's nothing sexy about it lol. Cell was wickedsplaz of course. Now im gonna be going to help Butler's cell. We're gonna be helping people in that hall out by offering them biscuits and tea when they get back from nightclubbing, so im gonna be up till like 3 or 4. They may be drunk, they may be abnoxious, but they're still loved by God, and we're gonna show them. The focus is on just being nice, it's not an Evangelical outing this time, well it's kinda passive Evangalism, just being the candles burning in the darkness, as we always try to be. Today I am born
"Steve, we baptise you in the name of the father, the son and the holy spirit." Not something that you hear over 100 people say in unison to you everyday. Today was something really special!! I was nervous all day, and I had good reason to be! Any way first off I had my family come up, and we ate in the harvester, 8 of them: Mum, Dad, Will, Grandma, Grandad, Craig, Auntie Susan and Margret. We ate, it was good, I was nervous. I actually met Ian there, having lunch with his family - he was one of the other 4 being baptised today. The church service was shorter than usual, all about Noah's ark, and my non christian family got to see my church doing its thing. The next bit scared the life out of me:- we will shortly be hearing the testimony of those getting baptised, and I was so worried! Luckily they meant at Elim church center - where the baptism pool is, so I had half an hour to compose myself. Nathan Moore made it with mr Tim Surry, I was really worried when he did't turn up to Open Heaven, but he pulled through. Changed in the toilets into shorts and t shirt. Now this was the scary part I was so nervous about We where called up individually and had to give detailed answers to- how did you become Christian? and why do you want to be baptised? In front of about 200 people!!!! Church goers (all students) and my family and uni friends. Luckily I went last and had time to listen to others stood at the back and compose myself. All day I had been praying, and others had been praying for me, just that God's holy spirit would fill me, and I would say what I needed to say. The holy spirit came through big time! I stood up there, shorts and T shirt, in front of 200 people with their eyes on me and told them about myself, and my journey in God. Needless to say I was terrified!!! I did however, with the holy spirit speaking through me make one hell of a speech apperently. Despite being so nervous I'v been told I spoke with real conviction, that I stirred up peoples hearts, that I put forward my faith so well. I acknowldeged my family, I said although I wasn't raised Chrisitan I love my family dearly, and wouldn't want to be in any other fanily, that although my mum does'nt really understand, I love her so much. I got one big cheer when I finished from everyone, probably because I answered the second question as: " Just as Jesus was baptised before he started God's work, so must I before I start the work God has set for me. I want to go out there and tell the world, that Jesus Christ is my Lord, God and saviour and my life is dedicated to him, I want to show them the love that God has shown me and the difference it has made to my life and the difference it can make in everybody's life if we just trust in him!" I was quiet impressed with the reaction I got, which tells me the holy spirit spoke through me and that I spoke words that people would go away and take to heart and think about. Of course none of this was my doing, it was all by the grace of God. Nothing I have done made me a good public speaker, it is all God working through me. Without him I am nothing, he is responsible for all that is good in me. Having gotten the terrifying testimony out the way we all stood at the front and were prayed for individually. People just came up and said what they wanted to say. James came up to me and read me 1 Timothy 4:12: " Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for believer's in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. Untill I come, devote yourself to the public reading of scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid thier hands on you. Be dilligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers" He told me that the first thing he noticed about me was my hair lol. But as he got to know me, he realised that I was someone that was not afraid to stand up and say this is the truth. That I had a deep understanding of what truth is, and I should keep to that, and tell others. That my knowlegde of the scripture has been a blessing to the cell group. With four other people beside me, I watched and listened as people came up and spoke to them too. I was even happier about them than about myself. There was something so beautiful about it. I was first to be baptised. I got in the waist deep luke warm water, just a pool cut into the floor of the room with all 200 people watching. Nathan on my left and James on my right. I stood facing Ness and answered the two questions: 1) Do you believe and trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour? 2) Do you promise to follow and serve Him for the rest of your life? I said yes to both, and was taken backwards into the water by Nath and James. I did hear James say "get his hair in there!" I came up to cheers and applause. My sins had been washed away. I had died, been crucified on the cross with Jesus, and rose again. I feel so good!!! I feel so clean - blameless and pure I feel like I have only just been born I feel rested I am a new person, it's crazy. I grinned from ear to ear at the beauty of it as the other four where baptised, it really was something amazing, with so many people there to support me. Many, Many hugs and handshakes - many. My dad and I had the biggest hug ever, we both cried. He just said how proud he was of me. A lot more hugs and handshakes from all my friends here from the church that I love deary, and my family. I got cards from loadsa people, and my cell, a necklace from James in my cell. It was so amazing! I have photos, curtesy of JT too! My cell, and Nath went to Pizza Hut too, to celebrate the best way I know. Cold walk there though! Im still going over it all in my mind. The biggest day of my life! A good day!!
Mmmmm porridge, I said to myself as I ate breakfast. Despite not having the lie in, or rest I wanted over a very busy weekend porridge, and indeed breakfast in general is always a cause for celebration. The best news ever occured when I arrived for my lecture quadrawhammy startign at 9, that is 4 lectures of an hour each, back to back in the same room - blimey. It was cancled! someone left the skylight open all weekend and the room was maxi flooded. Mwhahaha!!` All my lectures cancelled, a full day off! (Ignoring the work I'v been doing) It's so cool!
Iv been celebrating by skipping everywhere and rocking/dancing/wiggling to Avenged Sevenfold in my room. Lucky other people still had lectures on, they think i'm strange enough as it is. I did my washing, it came out of the tumble dryer really toasty, so I ran around excitedly, then took it back to my room and lay on it. Warm, toasty XD, was so nice.
Alpha laters! That makes my mondays. Free food (I eat at hall still anyway) I eat so much...
The church welcome meal yesturday was coolmax! I love the people there, love them to bits XD. I'm getting more and more people to come to church..... hehehee.

I had the most amazing day yesturday and I want to rant about it, because days like that are worth remembering. Night before = pizza + bed at half 1. Score. The moment I woke up gave God a big thumbs up and grinned from ear to ear. I got up at 7 to be at a prayer breakfast by 7:15. I was tired and yawning. I found the best breakfast ever though! Get some toast, butter it, put apple slices on and sprinkle with brown sugar. Yum yum. Through the prayer afterwards I completly felt energised, the holy spirit was with me through the whole day! It's great when it happens, you can't stop smiling, you're friendly with everyone enerywhere. I went back and got so much work done without feeling overworked, but happy and productive. I talked to random people good at lunch, mentioning alpha a lot. CAD was awesome, and I got an A* in my coursework and finished my second piece. FES, the christian union I go to was awesome. I had a talk with Abbey afterwards and shared my views good. She is really on the same train of thought as me. hehe I inspired her. Learning time....
I'm being baptised in two weeks, but what does that actually mean? This is the info I was sent. I already knew that it is going to be the most important day of my life yet, and I am really nervous. Have a read and see why I say it is the most important point of my life yet: Baptism Baptism is a sign of initiation into the lifelong journey of following God. It confirms someone’s decision to follow Christ-a fundamental part of the conversion process. Baptism has been central to the practice of the church right from its start eg Peter’s instructions on the Day of Pentecost were “Repent and be baptised” (Acts 2: 38). Jesus himself was baptised and set the model for us. Nowadays, many people see baptism as a nice cultural thing to do when a baby is born. However, it is clear that the Bible’s teaching on baptism is something that happens once an individual has made a conscious decision to follow Christ – this is obviously not something that an infant can do. It is more biblical to have a thanksgiving to God for a new baby, but allow them to get baptised as a result of choosing Christ for themselves. At Open Heaven, we do baptisms by full immersion as this was the normal mode of baptising in the New Testament. The actual word ‘baptise’ means to immerse, to saturate and to submerge. There is also great symbolism in full immersion baptism – a dying to past and sin, being buried with Christ and then rising again with him out of the waters into a new life. Rom 6: 4 The use of a lot of water is also symbolic of the cleansing work of the Holy Spirit that happens on the inside-the forgiveness of sins Acts 22: 16 “Get up, be baptised and wash your sins away, calling on his name” Baptism is the outward expression of an inward faith – in itself it does not bring salvation, it is rather a mark of discipleship. It is a chance to ‘go public’ about the decision to follow Christ. It provides a chance to give your testimony to friends and family and is a declaration to stand up and be counted for Christ. Some common questions 1. If I'm a Christian, do I have to be baptised? As we read the Bible we see that baptism is a very clear command in Scripture for us to obey. Jesus himself was baptised before he began what God had sent him to do. Surely we should do the same? Baptism is a great thing - the start of a new life with a clean slate with Jesus being our Lord and friend. 2. I was Christened as a baby or confirmed as a teenager. Isn't that the same? When we are christened as babies, our parents are thanking God for their new child, and the priest prays that God will take care of the child as they grow up. Confirmation is a Church of England tradition that is a further commitment to living God’s way. Both christening and confirmation can be useful indicators of a desire to follow God, but neither are mentioned in Scripture and they are not the same as baptism. Practical details We use another church’s baptistry, or we hire out a swimming pool at the end of a Sunday gathering. At some point in the meeting you will be asked 2 questions to help you share your story of faith in Christ. Please think about your answers to these questions. It really helps people to have their answers written down on paper to look at. Try to be concise in your answers and time yourself beforehand to ensure it doesn’t go over 5 mins. If you would like someone to read through what you have written beforehand, just ask Ness or your cell leader. 1) How did you become a Christian? (This answer can be structured into 3 parts-1) what was life like before you became a christian 2) What was the moment/process of you accepting Jesus’s work on the cross for you individually 2) Why you want to be baptised now? 3) What have been the changes since? We will then give an opportunity for people to pray for you. After that everyone walks round to the church/ swimming pool where you will have a chance to get changed. (Remember to bring a towel with you and ask someone to be your ‘towel person’ who is ready with it as you come up out of the pool.). N.B. People will take photos or video parts of the meeting & your baptism. (If you particularly don’t want us to video your baptism please let us know so we don’t record it.) We are quite happy with you to ask two special people to actually baptise you - perhaps people who were instrumental in you becoming a Christian, or have helped you significantly grow in God. There is nowhere in the Bible that says only leaders can baptise, in fact the Bible specifically calls all Christians ‘priests’ 1 Peter 2:9. As you stand in the water, with your two friends either side of you, one of the church leaders will ask you 2 questions: 1) Do you believe and trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour? 2) Do you promise to follow and serve Him for the rest of your life? After saying a big ‘yes’ to these 2 questions, cross your arms over the front of your body and the 2 either side of you will say together: ” Your name, we baptise you in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit”. Take a deep breath and relax as you will be taken backwards into the water and then brought up again-probably accompanied to everyone clapping and cheering! Before getting Baptised.....a check list! Think about all the areas in your life (e.g. friends, family, jobs, money, possessions and your own plans) and ask that Jesus would come first in them from now on. What are the areas of your life that you want to leave behind, or burdens that you want to let go of? Write them down in a list, share it with your discipler or cell leader so they can pray with you and throw it away after your baptism. Make the most of this opportunity to tell your friends and family about Jesus and your decision to follow him - invite them to come along to your baptism!
